East Brighton Councillors Nancy Platts and Gill Williams joined the team to help plant trees near Wellsbourne Health Centre. The trees form part of the plan to create a community garden that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Last year Cllr Gill Williams gave her Ward Budget to help get the garden started and it has been great to see everyone getting involved and transforming a grey, concreted area with brightly painted planters, flowers and trees.

Already local people have laid some wildflower turf, planted bulbs, silver birch, rowan and oak trees. They have built a tool shed to house all the tools they have collected and built some brilliant seating from old wooden pallets.

Recently the group was donated £1500 worth of trees by the Plant Your Postcode project, (find out more at https://www.wellsbournehealthcare.org.uk/plant-your…/) and Gill and Nancy arrived to help plant fruit trees that in the future will bear apples, pears, cherries and walnuts.

Gill and Nancy sawed wooden poles to help give the trees stability and cut up plastic bottles which were planted next to each tree so that rainwater can travel straight down to the roots.  Planting took place on a very steep slope and it was hard work but very satisfying to see the young trees in place.
