Brighton & Hove Labour For the many, not the few
Labour Councillor Carmen Appich on Food Waste Action Week:
This week is Food Waste Action Week!
This week marks the first ever Food Waste Action Week – a campaign encouraging residents to check out what’s in the fridge and to use up leftovers.
Check out bhfood.org.uk and lovefoodhatewaste.com. You’ll find some great leftover recipes on there, too. We waste so much money and put additional pressure on our environment by throwing out food. If food waste were a country, it would have the third biggest carbon footprint after the USA and China!
This week (like most weeks), I have:
- Taken a caddy full of vegetable and fruit peelings and teabags to the composting bin in the Secret Garden
- Made soup out of left-over root vegetables and broccoli ends and frozen what I couldn’t eat
- Made sure I only buy what our small household of 2 can eat or freeze in a week
- Checked out the Olio food sharing app to see whether there’s anything I might want
The composting bin is a great idea, and we need more of them here in Hove. My journey to the nearest usable one is 45 minutes on foot (20 minutes on the bike along seafront cycle lanes)! That’s too far. We should have composting bins in the space outside Hove Town Hall, I am sure we would find some volunteers to look after them.
Let me know how you have reused or composted your food waste!
