Monday 18 January 2021 is a federal holiday in the US and is known as Martin Luther King Day.

Brighton & Hove Labour Party wish to extend our warmest wishes to all those who commemorate this day.

Martin Luther King Day matters because it recognises Dr King’s legacy of service while inspiring us to serve in our own ways.

It is in recognition of his lifetime of achievements. As one of history’s greatest civil rights campaigners, it also pays tribute to all those ordinary men and women who stood firm alongside Dr King, thus honouring his legacy and philosophy of non-violence.

A lot of the things Dr King advocated for during his lifetime –  racial justice, economic equality, affordable housing, labour rights, etc are issues we’re still having to deal with in 2021.

The Black Lives Matter movement, for example, follows in the footsteps of the civil rights movement and leaders like Dr King. The fight for justice is ongoing, and we can use this day to reflect on the work that Dr King started and take responsibility for the work we still have left to do.

On this day, we remember the civil rights movement and Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.
