Statement regarding Brighton & Hove Independent Newspaper

In its front-page editorial today, the Brighton and Hove Independent makes accusations against Labour local candidates of improper behaviour on social media regarding a recent incident while canvassing. The description of events in the publication is inaccurate and does not reflect the accounts of the majority of people present. The article makes baseless accusations against Labour candidates. We are seeking legal advice on this matter. We were also disappointed not to be asked for comment prior to the publication of the article.

Brighton and Hove has the opportunity to elect three Labour Members of Parliament and a Labour-run City Council on 7 May. We will be out campaigning for a Labour victory every day. We will not allow volunteers to be intimidated as campaigning is an integral part of democracy. Everyone who takes part should be treated in a respectful manner both by other political parties and all forms of media.
