Labour welcomes smartcard ticketing on local buses

bigpic_1_.jpgIn response to Brighton and Hove City Council’s statement announcing the introduction of electronic smartcard ticketing on local bus services, Councillor Gill Mitchell, the Transport spokesperson for the Labour and Co-operative Group, said:

We welcome the announcement to introduce smartcard ticketing on local buses as this is something that we have long called for. We firmly believe in a better integrated transport system and the use of new technology. This technology has been successfully used in London for over ten years now, and it is about time it arrived in Brighton and Hove.

“The council must take a far more serious approach to make this scheme work. The partnership with the bus operators needs to be strengthened, and the council must continue to support routes that people rely on but which are not always commercially profitable.
