Brighton and Hove Labour have today called for the Government to axe their plans to cull Badgers across the UK to tackle Bovine TB in cattle, despite scientific evidence showing a cull would not be effective in halting the spread of the disease. The Labour Party has already announced it would axe the plans if elected to Goverment in 2015.
The group have also called on the Green minority adminstration on Brighton and Hove Council to urgently look at doing whatever they can to prevent any culls taking place across the city.
Commenting on the proposals, Gill Mitchell, Environment Spokesperson said
‘We are firmly against the Government’s flawed Badger Cull plans - it’s a policy that flies in the face of scientific opinion on how to tackle incidents of Bovine TB in Cattle. I and my colleagues will be pushing this Green minority administration to make sure they do everything they can to stop culls taking place across the city.
With Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary Mary Creagh already committing to a future Labour Government axing the Government’s plans, the best way to stop the badger cull in its tracks is to elect a Labour Government, alongside a Labour Council for Brighton and Hove, in 2015.
